Privacy policy

Last updated: April 2, 2026

The privacy of your data — and it is your data, not ours — is a big deal to us. In this policy, we lay out: what data we collect and why; how your data is handled; and your rights with respect to your data. We never sell your data.

precis.fyi is a personal project operated by an individual, not a company. This policy applies to all interactions with the service via email at hey@precis.fyi.

What we collect and why

Our guiding principle is to collect only what we need.

Email content

When you email hey@precis.fyi, we process the content of your email (sender address, name, subject, body, and attachments) to generate a reply. Email content is automatically purged after 7 days. We do not retain copies of your emails beyond this period.

Memories (opt-in)

If you choose to enable the memory feature, the AI assistant may store short notes about your preferences, ongoing topics, or other context to improve future conversations. Memories are:

User settings

We store your email address and your preference settings (memory on/off, web tools on/off, disclaimer version seen). This record is deleted if you request full data erasure.

Feedback

If you submit feedback, it is stored without your email address by default (anonymous). If you ask to be contacted about your feedback, your email address is stored alongside it. Feedback is automatically deleted after 7 days.

Breach notification contact

We retain your email address and an expiration date (set to approximately 3 years from your last interaction, rounded to end-of-month) solely for the purpose of contacting you in the event of a data breach. This record is retained under GDPR Article 17(3)(b) as a legal obligation and is not deleted when you request data erasure. It is automatically removed when it expires.

Third-party processors

Your data is processed by the following services:

Processor Purpose Data shared
Anthropic (USA) AI processing via the Claude API Email content, attachments
Postmark (USA) Email delivery Email addresses, reply content
Fly.io (USA) Infrastructure and hosting All data transits their servers

When web tools are enabled (opt-in), the AI assistant may also send search queries through Anthropic's API to external search providers.

We do not share your data with anyone else, and we do not use your data for advertising or marketing.

When we access your information

We only access your data to provide the service. No human reads your emails or memories except if required to debug a technical issue — and only with your express permission.

We may disclose information when required by law, such as a valid warrant or court order.

Your rights

We apply the same rights to all users, regardless of location:

To exercise any of these rights, simply reply to any email from precis.fyi or send a new email to hey@precis.fyi.

Consent model

Both memory and web tools are disabled by default. You must explicitly ask to enable them. Enabling a feature constitutes your consent to the associated processing. You can withdraw consent at any time by asking to disable the feature.

How we secure your data

All data is encrypted in transit via TLS. The database is stored on Fly.io infrastructure with encrypted volumes. We do not store payment information — the service is free.

Data retention

Data Retention
Email content 7 days (automatic purge)
Memories Until you delete them or disable memory
User settings Until you request erasure
Feedback 7 days (automatic purge)
Breach notification contact ~3 years from last interaction

Location of data

precis.fyi is operated and hosted in the United States via Fly.io. If you are located in the EU, UK, or elsewhere outside the United States, your data will be transferred to and stored in the United States.

Changes and questions

We may update this policy as needed. When we make significant changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and re-show the first-time notice to all users.

Have questions about this policy, your data, or your rights? Email hey@precis.fyi and ask.
